Naboso

Barefoot in the Carpathians

Naboso (Slovak for "barefoot") is more than just a name; it is a philosophy of connection. Based in the historic town of Svätý Jur, just a stone's throw from Bratislava, this project is the result of the shared passion of Nadja and Andrej. After years of gaining experience in the international wine scene—from the vineyards of Austria to the vibrant wine bars of Copenhagen—the duo (accompanied by their loyal "security manager," Ryba the terrier) returned to Andrej's roots to craft wines that are as honest as the earth they grow on.

The Terroir: Granite and Soul

The vineyards of Naboso are nestled in the foothills of the Small Carpathian Mountains. Unlike many of the surrounding regions, the terroir here is defined by a solid bedrock of granite covered by rich, sandy layers. This unique geological formation gives the wines an unmistakable dimension: a vibrant energy, a fine-grained minerality, and an elegant precision that sets them apart.

With approximately five hectares of vines facing south and southeast, Nadja and Andrej work in harmony with nature. Their organic approach in the vineyard ensures that only the healthiest, most expressive grapes make it to the cellar.

The Philosophy: Patience and Precision

At Naboso, "natural" does not mean unpredictable. Their mantra is simple: "The wine has to be stable, without faults, drinkable, and enjoyable." This commitment to quality means that the wines are given the luxury of time. Most Naboso wines mature for at least two years—and sometimes as long as five—in neutral oak or acacia barrels before they are deemed ready to leave the cellar.

The winemaking process is guided by gravity and minimal intervention. Spontaneous fermentation, no filtration, and only the smallest addition of sulfur (if any) are the standards. The result is a collection of wines that are pure, precise, and deeply reflective of their origin.

Inside the 17th-Century Cellar: A Study in Patience

The heart of Naboso lies beneath their historic manor house, where a 200-year-old stone cellar provides the perfect sanctuary for winemaking. Here, the process is defined by gravity and minimalism.

  • Gentle Vinification: The grapes are fermented spontaneously in open vats before the wine is moved by gravity into the barrels.
  • The Vessel: They primarily use used oak and acacia barrels (ranging from 225L to 600L). Acacia, in particular, is often chosen for their white wines to preserve freshness and floral aromatics without the heavy influence of oak.
  • Time is the Key Ingredient: One of the most distinct aspects of Naboso is their commitment to aging. Most wines mature on their lees for at least one to two years—and sometimes much longer—before they are bottled unfiltered and unfined.
  • Minimal Intervention: Sulfur is used only in tiny amounts, and only if the wine truly needs it to remain stable and "clean."

We look for producers who bridge the gap between "wild" natural wine and world-class precision. Naboso does exactly that. Their wines are soulful and alive, yet they possess a structural integrity and clarity that makes them a joy to drink for both natural wine newcomers and seasoned connoisseurs. We work directly with Nadja and Andrej to bring these Slovakian treasures to your table, ensuring every bottle reflects the granite slopes and the patient hands that guided it.
